5 Tips to Get Started

Are you ready to take your business to the next level but don’t know where to begin? Here are 5 useful tips on how to start planning the direction you’re going to take your business.

1. Decide the destination before planning the route.

Where do you want your business to go? How will that fulfil your ambitions for your wider life? What does your company look like when it’s finished? What’s the end game? What’s the purpose of your business as it heads towards that end game?

It’s difficult to plan a route when you don’t know where you want to go.

2. Understand what you’ll need to get there.

What resources will you need to put in place? How will your business compete and grow? What will give you sustainability and future proofing? What will you need to learn, develop and become great at along the way?

3. Devote time to the journey.

There are a lot of competing demands on our time – even more so for those running companies. Sometimes it’s hard to devote time to creating your own future when the demands of the here and now are so fierce. Breaking out of the cycle of short term action and firefighting is critical if you want your plan to be more than a daydream.

4. Measure progress.

Measuring progress is important on so many levels. Are you on track? Do we need to speed up? Slow down? Even small steps along the way can be extremely motivational and when you see and feel the progress you’re making it will spur you on to even better things. Sometimes it’s hard to see how far you’ve come until you stop and take a look.

5. Adapt when necessary.

Things happen. Circumstances change as does the environment around us. A good plan will remain true to the destination and allow you to flex the route to get there. If you have the guiding point on the horizon, when unexpected things happen you can adapt far easier than having to rethink everything all over again.
