4 Reasons to Plan your Business

We all know that we should have a plan in place, but did you know that less than 18% of business owners have a written plan for their business? Below we look at 4 reasons why you should plan your business and the benefits of doing so.

  1. Clarity – Choose your own destiny.

Your business could be the vehicle to the life that you want or it could be the chain that binds you to a life you never really wanted in the first place. The main difference in these outcomes? Knowing where you want to go.

If you have a defined end goal, a purpose, a specific aiming point for where you want your business and your life to be in 5 years’ time, you’re far more likely to reach that end point. If you don’t? You’ll get somewhere, but who knows if that will be a great place or not?

Businesses evolve and develop over time. To get to the place you want to be in 5 years, the evolution of your business starts now – it’ll either take you towards that goal or away from it. And if you don’t know what that goal looks like, you won’t know which it is until it’s too late. Maybe you’ll get lucky … or maybe not. And who wants to trust to luck anyway?

  1. Focus

When you know where you’re going, you can make progress towards that destination every week and every month. Sometimes that progress will be fast, sometimes it will be slower – the important thing here is momentum and always making continual progress.

For businesses (and people for that matter) if you don’t have a guiding ambition, a clearly defined aiming point, you’ll probably end up just repeating each year over and over again with some minor growth, shrinkage or tweaks to what you’re doing. For some people, that’s OK – for others it’s not enough.

The focus that having a plan and a way to execute it brings is so powerful. Gone are the days of looking back at the notes you made 12 months ago that have lain dormant in a drawer since the day you made them.

  1. Intention

How many people do you know with dreams and ambitions that never get fulfilled? Often the only cause of that failure is that other things get in the way. If you can describe where you want to go, how to get there and put the activity in place to make it happen, you stand a much greater chance of fulfilling those ambitions than if you have a vague, it’ll happen someday kind of approach. You wouldn’t get married, go on a holiday of a lifetime, retire or embark on any of life’s other major journeys without a destination in mind or a plan of how to get there …

  2. Control

When you know where you’re going, why and how to get there you can enjoy the journey way more. Being in control of your own fate and seeing the steady progress you’re making to bring it all about means you stand way more chance of having a happy, fulfilled and exciting working life than if you’re just being buffeted about by the winds and waves and ending up where they take you.
