What’s the purpose of employing people in your business?

What’s the purpose of employing people in your business? For most business owners it comes down to one of 2 things :

  • Capacity – more hours to do more of what the business does.
  • Skills – someone who can do something the business currently can’t.

But have you ever thought of it a little differently? Maybe what we’re looking for is to employ people who can replace you? People who can run the business better than you?

Why would you want that? Let’s look at it in more detail.

Most growing businesses, often started by an expert in whatever it is the business does, build a team of supporting people who enable the founder to do more of the expert activity (often customer or job related).

This means that very soon the founder is looking after new team members, customers and the workings of the business itself.

What if, instead of looking for support to help you do more of what your business does, you started looking for people who could do the work better than you can. Sure, you’d have to find, train, nurture and develop those people but if they could look after your customers better than you can and do it in a way that is consistent with “How we do things around here” (which is specified by you), what would that allow you to do in terms of growing your business and enabling the life you want outside of work?

We call this the cycle of business. Instead of you looking after your team members, customers, business admin and all of the other stuff that comes with running a company, what if you only had to look after your team? Then they looked after your customers (better than you can) and in turn your customers provide the resource (money) you need to improve your business and ultimately enable the life that you want?

The trick is to build a team of people who run the systems of your business so you deliver an outstanding, consistent customer experience every time. People who can use their initiative and knowledge to deal with unusual challenges or opportunities just as you would because they understand what you’re aiming for and the approach you want them to take.
